BUT WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
THE BENEFITS OF WORKCAMPS
International workcamps are an intercultural immersion facilitating communication and adaptation. You get to know people and work with them to improve their lives in a tangible way. You can 'test the waters' of international service without a long term commitment.
It may sound unbelievable that through NOCONA Canada you can live in a foreign country for 2-3 weeks for less than $300 Canadian, but you really can.
You will "get back much more than the time and tiny amount of money [you] give. By working, living and playing with people from a variety of countries and cultures, volunteers transcend a country's tourist façade and transform their own sense of the world."
As a workcamper, you will have a much deeper experience of the language and culture, of the real people of the country you are in. You will have a context and reason to be there, taking you beyond the superficial world of empty sightseeing. You will learn about the wider world, about different people, different needs and wants.
The dynamics of each workcamp are unique, depending on the particular volunteers who are there. You may find a number of different motives for taking part in a workcamp, for example:
- To do something useful during a holiday
- To be active for a cause important to you
- To travel and become acquainted with a different country
- To improve language skills
- To contribute to a foreign community
- To experience communal living and intensive group dynamics
- To forge strong and lasting friendships
